Update – Week of October 19, 2015

National Grid is conducting investigation work in and adjacent to the Trump Village Shopping Center and its parking lot. The investigation activities will further evaluate the distribution (if any) of coal tar under the ground at these locations.  Coal tar is a black, oily substance which is a byproduct of the MGP process. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has stated that people present at the site are not expected to come in contact with contaminants associated with the former MGP. There is no coal tar contamination at the ground surface.  The upcoming work will not be accessible to the public.

The work is in progress and is expected to last for approximately one more week. The work will be conducted under the supervision of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Completed work includes:

  • Measuring for the absence/presence of coal tar in the 11 existing monitoring wells; and
  • Drilling of 8 soil borings within the vacant areas of the Trump Village Shopping Center.

The remaining investigation activities include:

  • Drilling 4 soil borings within vacant areas of the Trump Village Shopping Center.

During this work, you will see drilling equipment.  Some noise, odor and vibration may be experienced.  There will be air quality monitors on the site.  Work will conducted during daytime hours.

National Grid will provide future updates as activities progress. The Site Updates Archive section under the Key Documents tab of this website will include all of the updates. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the site hotline at (718) 403-3014.
